On "The Historical Pattern of Institutional Delegitimation"
Miles Thornton's essay on the cycle of institutional trust collapse is the most useful framework I have read for understanding the current political moment — but I think it underweights the degree to which digital media has altered the cycle's dynamics in ways that may not have historical precedent.
In prior trust collapse cycles, the propagation of institutional critique was constrained by the bandwidth of distribution channels. The cascade phase required newspapers, television broadcasts, books — channels that had editorial filters and publication costs that moderated the rate at which institutional critique spread and the degree to which it was exaggerated or fabricated. Social media has removed these constraints. The cascade phase of the current cycle is operating at a speed and a noise-to-signal ratio that prior cycles did not experience.
The question this raises for Thornton's framework: if the cascade phase is operating faster and with more misinformation than prior cycles, does the resolution phase follow the same timing? Or does accelerated cascade imply either accelerated resolution (the dysfunction becomes so visible that reform coalitions form faster) or structural blockage (the information environment is so degraded that reform coalitions cannot form at all)?

On "The Meaning Crisis Is an Economic Signal"
Dr. Priya Nair's essay persuasively makes the economic case for the meaning deficit but, I think, somewhat overstates the novelty of meaning as a byproduct of institutional participation.
Historians of work have documented that the experience of labor in pre-industrial crafts and small-scale agriculture was frequently brutal, isolating, and certainly not experienced as meaningful by the people who performed it. The retrospective idealization of craft work, guild membership, and farming community as intrinsically meaningful draws on the testimony of a minority of literate craftsmen and farmers who had the leisure to reflect on their work, not on the majority who experienced it as necessity with little room for meaning construction.
This doesn't undermine the main argument — that something has been lost in the casualization of contemporary labor markets — but it complicates the historical baseline. What has been lost may be less the inherent meaningfulness of prior institutional structures and more the stability and legibility of social position that those structures provided. The difference matters for the policy prescription: restoring stability and legibility of social position may be achievable without restoring the specific institutional forms that prior generations inhabited.

On "The AI Liability Framework Is Forming"
Elena Vasquez's essay correctly identifies the emerging framework but may be too sanguine about the clarity of the product liability analogy for AI systems.
The product liability framework developed for physical goods rests on the ability to trace causation from a specific product defect through a causal chain to a specific harm. In AI systems, two features of the causal chain make this tracing structurally different: the non-determinism of model outputs (the same input does not consistently produce the same output), and the emergent nature of capabilities (behaviors that appear in large models are not explicitly programmed and may not be predictable from the training data or architecture).
These features are not arguments against AI liability — they are arguments for a liability framework specifically designed for AI's causal structure, rather than one borrowed from physical product defect law. The question is whether courts will develop such a framework through common law development or wait for legislative action. The history Vasquez cites suggests common law development will precede legislation, which means courts will need to grapple with non-determinism and emergence in ways they have not yet been asked to do.

On "The Antitrust Revival Is Structural, Not Political"
I read Vasquez's antitrust essay with the particular interest of someone who has spent 20 years practicing in this area, and I want to offer a qualification that I think matters for assessing how structural the revival actually is.
The academic framework shift Vasquez describes is real — the New Brandeis School's influence on antitrust theory is genuine and significant. But the translation from academic framework to judicial doctrine is far less direct and far slower than the essay suggests. The Supreme Court's antitrust jurisprudence is not primarily driven by law review articles; it is driven by the preferences of the justices who sit on the Court. And the current Court, which includes several justices with strong Chicago School inclinations, is unlikely to produce the doctrinal shifts that would give the new academic framework legal force.
The structural antitrust revival, if it happens, will happen through Congress rather than through the courts. The Merger Filing Fee Modernization Act, the American Innovation and Choice Online Act, and similar legislative proposals would create the statutory basis for the enforcement approach Vasquez describes. Watch the congressional track, not the judicial track, for the indicator of whether the revival is durable.

A correction
In our February issue, our essay on the semiconductor supply chain stated that TSMC produces "approximately 95% of the world's most advanced semiconductors." The correct figure is approximately 90% of chips manufactured at the most advanced process nodes (sub-5nm), with Samsung producing the remaining 10%. We have corrected the online version and thank the reader who flagged the error.
An editor's note on our quantum computing coverage
Several readers have written to ask whether our essay "The Quantum Computing Timeline Has Shifted" is premature — that the field has seen false dawns before, and that we risk repeating the cycle of enthusiasm and disappointment that has characterized quantum computing coverage for three decades.
We take this concern seriously. The essay explicitly acknowledges the history of premature timeline compression. Our assessment is not that fault-tolerant quantum computing is imminent — it is that the engineering barrier crossed by the below-threshold error correction demonstration is genuinely new and genuinely significant in ways that distinguish the current moment from prior false dawns. We remain committed to revisiting this assessment when new evidence warrants.
